Wurm Online

Wurm Online is a rather unique game experience that somewhat defies classification into a specific genre. Although it can be loosely termed a MMORPG for Mac due to the nature of character creation and progression involved, the game also features elements of construction simulation games and even god games (players can use terraforming techniques on the game world to reshape the ground plane to their liking). There are no class restrictions for spells and abilities and the game world even offers the ability to become a priest for one of the game world’s four religions and gain spells related to that religion. As you advance your avatar through playing, it is completely up to you which way to develop your skill set and what to do with your time online.

The primary objective of the developers of the Wurm Online MMORPG for Mac was to create an online space where the player is free to make their own way, almost devising the game themselves as they go along. The whole world is basically player built and maintained similar to Second Life, although where Second Life was never intended to be an actual game, Wurm Online is a game first and foremost and aims to be fun. Therefore, it does contain proper gameplay mechanics to keep players entertained. The game world also has several mountable creatures – even including Unicorns! – and much to see and do already.

In order to play on the free introductory servers, you simply have to create an account, get the client and log in. The game has pretty modest system requirements and uses OpenGL on Java, so you should just need to install the Java and Java Web Start software in order to obtain the client and begin playing. If you choose to, you can upgrade to a premium (paid) account later on and play on additional servers with other paying members and more content, but this is not mandatory and many people simply stay on the free server.
