Second Life – Social 3D MMO for Mac
Second Life is most probably the purest online virtual world available today. Although seen by many as an MMORPG for Mac the technical definition (and the developers’ own definition) is that Second Life is not actually a game. Although Second Life allows the creation and customization of an avatar much like any other MMO for Mac, in contrast it has no objectives, no storyline and no defined “roles” for the user. Despite this, Second Life is hugely popular and has millions of users (knows as Residents) logging in and participating every day. Their activities are as varied as in real life and this is where Second Life really excels; it is a virtual world very much like our own but customizable.
Residents are free to explore the huge virtual world, purchase land and build anything they like on that land, create and trade virtual items and services and much more. Many people actually supplement their real world income with real money made from Second Life activities like these or even from a real job in-world. For example, many Residents will pay for unique customizations to their avatar just to make themselves stand out and then may apply for work as a model, dancer, bartender or other jobs that are often available in virtual bars and clubs within the Second Life MMO for Mac and will earn real money in return. There are also event planners who manage and host events for real world companies within the virtual world, or Second Life parties for other celebrations and events. There have been concerts in Second Life, gigs with real bands and paid tickets, and much more.
So, although Second Life may not be strictly classified as an MMORPG for Mac, there is much to do and see within the virtual world. Since Second Life is also completely free to get started with, it makes sense to at least try it out and see what all the fuss is about.
