War of Legends is a free browser-based empire building real-time strategy MMO for Mac, Windows and Linux. Set in a world of ancient Chinese mythology, War of Legends allows the player to choose an avatar and become a feudal “Lord”, taking control of a town and attempting to build it into a great city, conquering the surrounding lands in the process.

The gameplay in War of Legends largely concerns the collection and management of resources, the development of new buildings, structures and fortifications in the player’s towns and strategic warfare against both player and non-player enemies. Each Lord can develop their main city and at a certain level of prestige and power can build up to three sub-cities to expand their empire and influence further in the game world. The game rewards players a rank based on reputation, ranks Legends (individual avatars) based on level and statistics, and ranks cities according to level and population. Players can form alliances with other players, effectively linking their cities and bringing extra content and a higher level of social interaction to the game.

In a similar vein to other MMORTS for Mac games, War of Legends adopts a free-to-play, pay-to-upgrade model. Players can create an account and play the game completely free of charge but have the option of purchasing in-game items from the game website which can speed up production, train new skills and more. This does lead to a slight imbalance between paying and no-paying players but the game is still fun to play even without spending any money.
